INVICTUS: Master of my fate and captain of my soul?

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley

I thought it worthy to post a Blog from a person I deeply admire for her work.   She combines Science and the Word of God.

One of her books is “Who switched off my Brain”

I’ve Highlighted in Red the points I thought verified my continued  pursuit of the Mind body Connection when it comes to Weight management/Health and Wellness.

Sins of the Grandfathers
Posted on December 15th, 2010.
Last month I started telling you about the amazing neuroplasticity of the brain, the literal ability to rewire the brain and create new and better networks. This aligns so perfectly with the Romans 12:2 -the renewing of the mind. I also introduced you to the newish science of Epigenetics which studies the extra-cellular factors that influence genetic expression. More specifically how we with our “I-Factor” have the ability to influence our own genetic expression.
This month, as we approach Christmas, I want to make you aware of how your thoughts not only affect you, but also your family and children and even as far down as your great great grandchildren! Science is showing us that the life experiences, thoughts and decisions of grandparents and even great-grandparents change their eggs and sperm so indelibly that this is passed onto their children up to 4 generations…this sounds a lot like the scripture “the iniquities of the father reach to the third and fourth generations” (numbers…)! As I love to point out: science is finally catching up with the bible.
This scriptural principal is scientifically termed: transgenerational epigenetic inheritance and basically means something outside the cell (diet, exercise, thoughts, nurturing) changes the “on/off” switches on the genes of the DNA in sperm and eggs.
Scientists has known for a while about these switches -clusters if atoms called methyl groups – but the fact that they can pass through the generations and that these tags can be reset is a new idea. Research labs around the world are are finding that experiences -lab rats being exposed to substances; people overeating; the decisions we make – leave a very tenacious imprint, an actual change in the switches.
These transgenerational effects can be healthy or toxic; for example what happened to your mother during her youth can affect your memory positively or negatively. Here’s the GREAT news:  no matter what happened, your gift, your ability to think in your unique way, can be used to change any epigenome you have created or that passed through to you through the generations. It’s up to you, your “I-factor”. This is basically he principle of renewing the mind (Romans 12:2)

You Have Control Over Your Brain Fitness
Posted on November 15th, 2010.
Brain scientists in recent years have discovered how the state of our mind – what the brain does – influences our overall mental and physical health. It’s wonderful news that our intellectual limits are NOT “set” or “fixed” in childhood only to then decline from the age of 25! This bleak and incorrect view of the human brain has, thank goodness, been overturned by the astounding new research that the brain grows and changes no matter what your age; it all depends on how you USE your brain.
When you adopt a lifestyle of intense mental focus, you quite literally “switch on” neuroplasticity, the marvelous ability of the brain the grow branches and unending scaffolds of networks to increase your intelligence. I have, in my own research, seen patients with severe trauma to the brain move to intellectual heights never dreamed off; students who thought they could not make it academically become master scholars; and people whose depression threatened to overthrow them set free.
Strategic approaches to thinking necessitate an understanding of your gift (see last months blog), how you think – which will create new neural pathways and strengthen existing ones for as long as you live! How you think and what you are thinking, which I call the “I-factor” are being proven scientifically to have as much if not more influence over our genes than diet and exercise. This is an emerging new field called Epigenetics and means control over and above the genes. This is very exciting because it means we are not victims of our biology, as we have been erroneously told, but are “captains of our souls” (from the poem ‘Invictus’).
What we think influences every aspect of who we are and how we feel physically. A fascinating study, one of many of this kind, done at Ohio State University shows that healing can be slowed by as much as 40% when one is stressed. Considering that stress is the body’s reaction to our thought life, our state of mind (our thought life), is quite literally determining our mental and physical health.
epigenetic ability to deal optimally with all the challenges of life.
It all boils down to the I-Factor, in other words it’s up to us to follow the words of scripture ” Every day I lay before you life and death; choose life so that you and your descendants may live” (Deuteronomy 18:19).

Missouri’s Gooey Butter Cake.
Posted on September 20th, 2010.
I have heard a lot about this pudding these last several days and it sounds rather…sticky, to say the least. And let us not even dare consider the calorie count. Or the carbs, mind you. We would induce a fat heart attack at the mere thought of such terrible things! But then I began drawing a brain parallel…odd, I suppose, as many would say that the normal human being does not have a tendency to find brain metaphors in puddings; nonetheless this viscous desert struck me with the veracity of mankind. It quite seems that the entire human race, myself included, is as “gooey” as this pudding…all our ingredients so muddled in illness and distortion that they only end up creating a messy copy of what we really should be…a beautiful creation to be enjoyed without the extra “weight” of misery about our soul’s thighs!
Yet thank God for His infinite grace and mercy! Mercy that is renewed each and ever day, a mercy that sent his one and only son to die for us so that us, these wretched humans, may live! Are we not blessed beyond belief? But these beatitudes do not cease their scintillating parade of life here! Did you know that even if we happen to fail again (and again…and again), we are still able get up, and with the help of God, move on forward to achieve the great things we were destined for? We can change, and we have the power through God to transform our mind into a power tool for the divine! We are neuroplasticians! We have epigenetics!
“Neuro palsto what what?” “Epi who who?” “Sounds…demonic!” Ah yes…I can see the bemusement on your faces…but before you shut down your computer in a moment of fear that you will not be too overly fond of these alien terms, wait! They are not as scary as they appear; in fact they are completely wonderful! These are two of God’s most precious gifts to mankind, and they make me over-the-moon excited that I am His amazing creation!
You see, neuroplasticity is, to give you a basic definition, the brain’s ability to change itself. And, considering that 87-92% of illness (both Physical and Mental) come from our though life, this is no little fact! We can change our thought, and we become fulfilled and whole, because God gave us the ability to do so! Is this not so wonderful? We can change, no matter what our past was or our present is!
And just how can we do this, you may be asking? Epigenetics is how! This term, simply put, means we have the ability to influence our genes…thus we are not a victim of our circumstances or our biology, but that we are a unique, beautiful, gifted creation with the power to choose the way we live our lives! We don’t have to accept depression, anger, fear, hatred…these are just distortions of our true, beautiful nature. We are wired for love, and we can choose to have as much love and beauty and happiness and joy as we want! Praise God!

Note:  So funny and intriguing that I've in the past used the reference to "Pudding Head".... I must have read it before?  Oh, where do we get our ideas?

Simple thoughts for a Simple Mind

Keep it Simple:

Feed your Spirit BEFORE you feed your Body

Stay away from WHITE!  (Sugar and Flour)

Drink 8 glasses of Water every day

Have A physical to determine if there imbalances (VIT D level)

Believe that if you exercise (at least 15 minutes every day) you'll feel and look better: DO IT

Self Talk:
I CAN do this
I WANT to do this
I WILL do this

This is about changing your HABITS
It takes 21 days to form a new habit
REPLACE OLD HABITS with NEW HABITS

NOW............................. another thought this morning (seeking to strengthen my Spiritual being)
Bitterness, Unforgiveness, Hatred, Resentment, Anxiety, Fear
All POISON  we Ingest

Thought for today:  Bitterness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die

Today I DETERMINED that I will FEED my Spirit before I fed my body.
The habitual practice of meeting with God at a specific daily time is Biblical.
The key word here is
HABITUAL !   Like brushing your teeth every morning (hopefully).

This morning I read

Matthew 5:44 (New King James Version)

44 But I say to you, love your enemies,
bless those who curse you,
do good to those who hate you,
and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

As I thought of those that have hurt me... those I wish ill towards (Yes, some people have tic'd me off)
I began to ask God to help me Forgive them as GOD has forgiven me.
Then I was drawn to the fact that I have hurt myself with decisions I have made in my life
I have been angry at myself for choices I have made that hurt others in my life
I have been kicking myself for not asking my Dad the day before he died a certain question.

I need to forgive myself
I need to forgive others for doing to me what I have probably done to God
If he forgives me than I MUST forgive others (without them asking for forgiveness!)

Well,  as you can hear..... I attempting to Balance my life.

Not just focusing on my body needing assistance in

growing old gracefully and with strength....

but looking inward into my Mind and Spirit for

also growing old gracefully and with strength.

Ciao
Have a Great Day!   I believe I WILL

Scrub it out or take a trip to to the Land of Truth

Growing up in a Pentecostal Church - Proud to say "Assembly of God"...
One of the Cabins at Camp "Pinecrest"

Every summer starting at 8 years of age, I would attend Church Camp.   What a privilege.
I refer to that experience because it was during those camps that I experienced the power of the Holy Spirit.

I know, I know... for those who follow my blog and know me are thinking....
"there she goes again with too much religious stuff".

Truth is,  I believe it.  I've experienced and I choose to live it.  I believe that we have a Creator.  I believe he made us in his image.  We are Spirit as well as Body and Mind.  We will live forever (being a Spirit) and we make a free will choice every moment of every day to serve our creator or serve our self.  God came and took the form of flesh.  He, Jesus came and walked this earth without sin so he could die a brutal death - sacrifice for our sins.  Because he died and rose again from the grave,
 WE ARE EMPOWERED.
We have been clothed in HIS righteousness (our righteousness is as dirty rags the bible says).
Isaiah 64:6

We are all infected and impure with sin.
When we display our righteous deeds,
they are nothing but filthy rags.

He has freely given  us (HIS PEOPLE) everything we need to live a life of strength, love, joy and health!

We struggle on this earth when we attempt to "do it ourselves".
We "bite the apple of deceit" that the world hands us.

Do you really believe you are without "emotional baggage"?
Unforgiveness, resentments, bitterness, (towards yourself or others) will clog up your life like  a Cholesterol of 300 in your arteries.

John 7:53-8:11 in the King James Version:
2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. 3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; ....7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

My strength comes from knowing my weakness
There, I said!

Back to what I was starting to say..... it was a church camp that I experienced the Holy Spirit speaking through me to God - Yes, Speaking in tongues!  Hey, it's the truth.... I'm not ashamed of my experience.
I learned as a young girl the tremendous CLEANSING power
of being in prayer and being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues.

I came to understand that we need to be healed of thoughts and
events that have touched our life ( mild forms of PTS: Post traumatic syndrome)
that hides inside our souls.
We need to be Healed of  our Emotional Baggage!

This form of prayer allows OUR SPIRIT to talk with God..

Yes, it's like sitting with a therapist, counselor or psychiatrist (for some)

attempting to bring out our thoughts, events that have impacted our lives....
 and
that have taken up residence in our souls and cause us distress, illness, anxiety, fears..... ok.... are you getting this?

But, I have always known since I was 8 years old that .... GOD made a provision for his people to be cleansed inside their souls,  of things we hold inside that we DO NOT UNDERSTAND are even there.
It's just like when our bodies are impacted by plaques of cholesterol that build up on the walls of our artieries ....  We don't know it until we have a blood test.... or worse have a cardiac event.

"emotional crap (baggage)" is clogging  and or taking up residence
in our hearts and minds  and robbing us of peace and joy

So, why bring this up in my Blog about Health and Wellness?

Yesterday I blogged about Sugars and Simple Carbs being a drug in our body.  I've blogged about FOOD in general being a source of our attempt to soothe and comfort ourselves.

Soothe and comfort ourselves from  the baggage, crap we carry in our souls.

We're looking for a "drug" to give us a temporary fix of peace and comfort.
FOOD can be that drug.
I read about the actual physiological chemical reaction that food has in our bodies that is just like a mild form of morphine.

I'm not going to be so bold as to say that everyone with a weight problem is trying to soothe and comfort
themselves with food..... but MOST everyone (who will admit it)  has "baggage".... emotional crap that we either choose to not deal with or do not know what the crap it is.  (yikes.... crap is kind of a vulgar word.... but it's crap)
I'm NO exception to this discussion....  I just never understood how I used food like a drug... and why I made chocolate chip cookies at 10 o'clock at night

You can spend a zillion dollars on therapist and counselors.

You can take medication....

..... you can eat yourself silly trying to pacify yourself.

Get to the root problem (that's what I'm desperately trying to do as I blog for ME!)
I was sick of hearing myself say for the past 10 years.....

"I just can't seem to lose  the weight, and I am really trying"
I tried meal replacement drinks, high protein diets, lemon water fast... starving
Joined Gyms... bought exercise equipment...

I needed to figure out WHY!
WHY don't the diets work and if they have any results... why did I gain the weight back?

BALANCE!

We  need help with "cleaning the emotional crap we have inside our Souls"

Listen,  I'm just saying.... Your creator , GOD has a way for you to have cleansing that is the most marvelous miracle ever gifted to us.  It's through Prayer, reading his word (which is him talking to you) and "really waiting upon the Lord".

To me it's like the Holy Spirit comes into us with a BIG SCRUB BRUSH
and gets into the corners of our mind (yes, I think we have square heads sometimes)...
and scrubs inside our Heart  (like grout on a tile wall).

I've imagined at times
when I get "angry" about someone or something.....
or something is really bugging me and I can't get it out of my mind

occurs to me that I need GOD to SCRUB it OUT OF MY HEAD.
I'm allowing something to ROB me of my peace!
I'm getting FAT over it!  Now that is the truth

Anger is nothing more than the crap that forms from "fear"  (all anger is a rooted in Fear)
and did you know that depression is suppressed anger....
Do you see the pattern?   Fear produces anger and anger not dealt with becomes depression and when we are dealing with these emotions (or not dealing with them) we seek comfort in..... OH MY ....  shall I say it?   Can you stop me?........ EATING!!!!

So, let me re-cap today's blogging.  I'll go backwards with the thought

Over eating (or choosing unhealthy foods ie. sugar and simple carbs)
MAY be a response of us trying to comfort and soothe ourselves
of  "emotional crap" that is hiding inside of us.

That is why I keep harping on "BALANCING our lives....
Physically, Mentally  and Spiritually .

Changing our eating habits or developing a exercise program
is NOT JUST ABOUT
 "will power and self discipline"

We can NOT get a handle on Eating properly and Exercising Daily until we explore what is hiding inside our hearts and minds.

That is were the RESISTANCE TO DOING WHAT IS RIGHT is rooted!

That is why "DIETS" DO NOT WORK!!!!!
(stat's are that less than 20% of those that lose weight on a diet keep it off permanently)
How many diet's and diet books discuss  the WHY's of over eating?  Get to the ROOT of the problem.

As I've said before  (harsh but true)
being overweight is a
symptom of an imbalanced life

80% of ALL illnesses are related to some type of imbalance in our
physical, mental and spiritual being

THE POWER to deal with our hearts and Minds
is in our SPIRITUAL Being.  Our Relationship with Our Creator
(he has the instruction manual on how we work and even a section on "troubleshooting" problems)

Ok,   now I have to go get that big Spiritual Scrub brush and get to cleaning!  A DAILY CHORE FOR ME!

Ciao
Salute! To your Health and Wellness

PS is sometimes the best!

Luke 18:9-14

Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector
9 Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer[a]: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

The Sweet High

Today's blog is a little disconnected....  as I blogged I had an epiphany which took me a different direction.
Crazy, but it's something I had read.... "food is a drug".... but it really hit home with me today as I blogged, when I realize it answered a BIG QUESTION I  have had since I started blogging
WHY do I reach for food I KNOW I shouldn't eat?  All the while saying "don't do it"... and still eat it.

----------here is where I started my blog today-----------------
I've attached a Portion of a site I believe worthy of thought.  It captivates me when I come across confirmation of a Truth I hold on to about Balance. The impact of our emotional/thought life on our health and well being (highlighted in red).
(click on the line above for the link to the web site used in this blog)
...FIVE  basic questions must be addressed when a  poor health condition exist:
  • 1.  Is the condition caused by deficiency of something (what must be done to get better)? (e.g. magnesium, electrolyte, B-vitamin or essential fatty acid deficiency)
  • 2.  Is the condition caused by something to avoid (what is making it worse)?(e.g. wheat or milk allergy, processed carbohydrates, caffeine, etc.)
  • 3.   Is the condition caused by something that needs to be eliminated/detoxified? (e.g. cadmium or lead intoxication, parasites, destructive job or relationship, etc.)
  • 4.  Is there a maladaptive emotional behavior or a core belief that impedes persistent progress/recovery? (e.g. excessive worry to the point it is detrimental, eating the wrong foods repetitively even when you feel poorly afterwards, believing you are not worthy of wellness or success).
  • 5.  Is there an interference field that is preventing healing/restoration? (e.g. a scar from an infection, trauma, burn, surgery, vertebral subluxation, or emotional event that has been imprinted into the autonomic nervous system)
Recently I have been in a conversation about a health issue with family, friends... and it surprises me that I have developed a consistent approach.  "BALANCE".

Yes, explore the medical (traditional western medicine) implications of the symptoms and rule out a metabolic, physiological explanation.

However, ALWAYS explore  the mental and spiritual  influence of one's self in relationship to the illness/condition.

This brings me to a conversation I  had this morning on the phone,  where something I HEARD  transformed my heart, mind and soul into a state of distress.

A physical manifestation of something I processed in my thoughts.

My heart racing, digestive system in a "tissy".... I'm sure my blood pressure was elevated and I had a surge of tense energy.

I found myself not resisting to eat when making my husband some breakfast.
I already ate my breakfast.  But in my stressed state I ate "a little something"  while not being hungry and not needing to eat and asking myself.... WHY am I eating this?????
--------------
(late post..... revisiting this blog:  I was explosive and irritable this morning because I "splurged" on chocolate covered toffee last night.  SUGAR! I guess I was needed a "fix" this morning since I was coming off a sugar high from last night)  I was soooo surprised at my reaction to something so benign. Now I understand what happened
-------------------
Here is the interesting thing:
Our body (due to our culture) seeks (unconsciously desires) Carbs when we are stressed out or "need to relax".  Like taking a drug?

Think about this:
Sugar and highly processed carbs release natural opioid in the brain.

Ever heard of "runner's high"?  This euphoric sensation occurs when exercise stimulates the brain to form endorphins.  These neurotransmitters are similar in molecular structure to the morphine but are much milder.  They activate the brain's pleasure center.

Like exercise, sugars and highly processed carbohydrates are also able to trigger the release of such endorphins (activating the opioid receptors).

In addition to activating the opioid receptors, sugar and highly processed carbs also have a physiologically calming affect because of the release of serotonin in the brain.  When the brain's serotonin level is increased after you have eaten sweets or a refined starch, you typically experience within twenty to thirty minutes a significant emotional relief.

It improves your mood, helps you to relax and contributes to an overall feeling of well-being.

However,  Sugar and highly processed carbs (ice cream, pastries, candy, breads) are like a drug that we can become dependent on.

Oh, right!  Now I get it!  (here is where I had my epiphany)

That is why I was baking Chocolate Chip cookies at 10 pm !
Even though I heard myself saying
.... "no, no... don't do it... you're trying to lose weight.... it's not healthy to eat late...
oh, I'll just have one... oh... it's not for me it's for my family as a treat... "
ahhh the conversation I would have.

Yet, like as if my body was detached from my mind, I would still make and bake and EAT the dang cookies (and usually, not just one!).  Oh, the guilt.

Now I finally understand!   It's taken a year of blogging to get this!
IT IS AN ADDICTION! ......Sugar is a drug!

I use to say  "Lord, I'll give up white sugar if you heal my loved one of their addiction" But I NEVER was able to give up foods that contained WHITE SUGAR.  Now, I understand WHY.

It is real!  The body's "craving" for sugar is like an addict that seeks out a drug KNOWING the consequences of their actions.
Even though they WANT to stop, they struggle to say no.

I would see that when I eat sweets, candies (See's Candy for SURE)... the next day I lack energy, feel depressed, IRRITABLE ... difficulty with coping.  TRUE!

That is why I have found that my strength to change my eating habits
have needed to COME FROM THE STRENGTH OF MY WALK WITH GOD!

I've known for sometime now that I have had a life of seeking satisfaction and comfort through "food"... dahhhhh   I'm American/ITALIAN!  But now I see that simple Carbs and Sugars have an affect like a drug.  And that's why I crave and seek out Carbs when Stressed.

During this past years Journey I have desired
to find satisfaction and comfort in my relationship with God
(always feel well and whole after time in prayer and reading Gods word)
to   find satisfaction and comfort in  Exercising
(always feel great after I exercise!)

So, I have elevated my awareness
to accepting that I've lived a life of being unbalanced
THAT HAS NOW CHANGED!

 When we accept the
FACT that Sugar is a  Drug
Fact that Simple Carbs are a Drug

we will treat "eating" with more respect

When you CHOOSE to be healthy and well...
When you become PASSIONATE about having Health and Wellness....
When you acknowledge you are BODY, MIND and SPIRIT and
when you seek to BALANCE yourself....

You will discover a new world of Health and Wellness to live in...
